Tonbridge

The market town of Tonbridge in Kent can be found on the River Medway, and is approximately 30 miles south east of London. Home to over 38000 people, Tonbridge gets a first documented mention in the Domesday book and its 10th Century castle made it an important strategic town, from Norman time through to the 17th and 18th Centuries. Tonbridge stands on a higher spur of higher land, and as a good crossing place for the River Medway, the towns name suggests a river crossing, although evidence of a bridge can only be found from the late 12th Century, after the first documentation of the towns name. Since the 19th Century the town has grown, and the area has been designated a Regional Hub, with engineering, publishing and printing and financial services being based there.
The market town is well catered for by restaurants and small outlets. Facilities include the River Centre: a church, community and conference centre, and an outdoor activity and residential centre, Carroty Wood. The Oast Theatre, a former oast house, is also present in the town.
